Johan Philipp Benz

  • Johan Benz is originally from Germany, where he received his Diploma in Biology from the Technical University in Braunschweig. He then worked for a few months as a research assistant at UC San Diego in the lab of Nigel M. Crawford, studying nitrogen uptake in plants. He returned to Germany for his PhD program, which was pursued at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich in the lab of Juergen Soll, where he studied the traffic of proteins into the “powerhouse” of plants – the chloroplast. After he received his PhD he returned to California to work in the lab of Chris Somerville at the EBI where he is studying the plant cell wall degradation strategies of filamentous fungi.
